Hurricane Laura Leaves Ball Waiting for Power Restoration

Ball remained on Cleco's restoration list several days after Hurricane Laura crossed Louisiana in August 2020. In a September 2 update, the utility projected that all of its affected Ball customers would have power restored by September 12. That was an estimate issued during the recovery, while crews continued evaluating damage.

Across its wider service area, Cleco reported broken poles, damaged transformers and hundreds of miles of downed distribution conductor. For a Ball food business facing an extended outage, a refrigerated trailer with an independent power supply could provide temporary storage while the electrical network was repaired.

The utility had more than 1,300 personnel working across Rapides and Grant parishes in the preceding day's update. Their assignments included line repairs, debris clearance and tree trimming, reflecting the amount of work needed before normal service could return.

Ball Moves Its 2025 Mardi Gras Parade to March 1

Rain forced a change of date for Ball's 2025 Mardi Gras parade, but the town kept its plans for an afternoon celebration. A February 26 announcement set the rescheduled parade for 2 p.m. on March 1, beginning at Powell Drive and Monroe Highway.

Mayor Gail Wilking reported about 35 participating groups at that point. The route was planned to finish near City Hall in the Ball Food parking lot. For businesses preparing food around a rescheduled parade, deliveries and cold storage need to match the revised day of service.

Wilking described a celebration built around generous throws and groups sharing floats. The new date gave participants and spectators another opportunity to gather after the weather disrupted the original weekend's arrangements.

Camp Livingston Road Project Removes Hazardous Trees and Repairs the Roadway

Tree removal and road repairs brought crews to Camp Livingston Road in Ball in late 2024. DOTD's project covered the stretch from Williford Road to U.S. 165 and was awarded to DSW Construction for $220,939.

Residents had described repeated problems with falling trees and damaged power lines. One told KALB that two recent tree falls had cut the electricity, and one had started a fire. For nearby food operations, keeping cold storage available during an unexpected power interruption is part of managing that kind of exposure.

The maintenance contract included roadway patching as well as tree removal. A March 11, 2025 DOTD update confirmed that construction work on LA1204/LA623 was complete and the roadway was open, with no further traffic effects expected from that project.

Ball's Christmas Program Pairs a Park Lighting with Breakfast and a Parade

Ball spread its 2025 Christmas activities across several December dates. The published program began with a December 5 festival at the town walking trail, including the park lighting, a community Christmas tree and a concert by the Tioga High School Choir. Drink vendors were also listed for the evening.

Breakfast with Santa followed at the community center on December 6. Where breakfast preparation includes perishable ingredients, cold storage has to be arranged before families arrive. The town's larger parade was scheduled for December 13 at 2 p.m.

Official instructions directed motorized entries to line up on Highway 165 at Powell Drive, while marching groups assembled at Paradise Elementary. The town reserved Santa's appearance for the end of the procession, giving the parade a clear closing moment after the floats and marching groups passed.

An Overnight Fire Closes Paradise Catfish Kitchen in Ball

Firefighters spent much of the night at Paradise Catfish Kitchen after a fire broke out on October 8, 2021. Ball Fire Chief Wes Anders said crews arrived at 10:08 p.m., and the final units left at 6:30 the next morning.

Several neighboring departments assisted the response. The chief described seven engines, two rescue units, a service unit and a ladder truck being used during the operation. No injuries were reported, and the cause was still being investigated in the initial account. An abrupt restaurant closure can also interrupt scheduled seafood deliveries, making emergency cold storage a consideration if unaffected stock must be handled elsewhere.

The restaurant had served the Ball community for decades in a building nearly 70 years old. Its owners said they were taking time to consider the business's future after the fire.

Freedom Baking Company Plans a Move and a New Name in Ball

Freedom Baking Company closed its Ball location on September 12, 2025, while owners Renee Free and Haley Greene prepared a move and a new name: Sugar Mamas Bakery. The planned location at 5911 Monroe Highway would add drive-through service, something the owners had wanted because of traffic congestion around their previous shop.

The women told KALB they intended to keep familiar recipes and customer favorites while introducing a more colorful look and additional menu items. Moving a working bakery also means arranging cold storage for chilled ingredients as equipment and supplies change addresses.

The business had opened in Ball about three years earlier. When the relocation was announced on September 22, the owners were aiming to open Sugar Mamas during the first week of October.

Paradise Catfish Prepares a New Takeout Location on Monroe Highway

Paradise Catfish Kitchen announced a new chapter in February 2023, setting March 2 as the opening date for its 2GO location at 5601 Monroe Highway in Ball. The announcement came after the original restaurant was lost to fire in October 2021.

The new service was planned for Thursday through Saturday evenings, from 4 to 8 p.m. A seafood kitchen preparing to reopen needs its cold storage ready before fresh stock arrives, alongside the other arrangements needed to restart cooking and customer service.

The replacement location gave the longtime Ball business a route back to serving customers in a takeout format. The regional tourism listing describes its catfish, homemade hushpuppies and slaw, connecting the new operation with the food that had made the earlier restaurant familiar to local diners.

Valentine's Day Thunderstorms Bring Tree Damage to Ball

A line of severe thunderstorms brought damaging wind to the Ball area on the night of February 14, 2026. NOAA's Storm Events Database places a local thunderstorm-wind report at Ball at 9:47 p.m., with trees reported down nearby.

The record lists an estimated wind gust of 50 knots and no reported injuries or deaths for the Ball event. It formed part of a broader Louisiana storm episode that also produced tornadoes, although the Ball entry itself is classified as thunderstorm wind. For food businesses, weather that threatens electrical service makes a backup plan for cold storage a practical part of storm preparation.

NOAA recorded an estimated $2,000 in property damage for the incident.

Paradise Catfish Announces a Temporary Handoff to 275 Smokehouse

The owners of Paradise Catfish announced a temporary change in the restaurant's operations in January 2026. Angelia Finger and Kimbo Williams told KALB they planned to step away while balancing personal commitments and other work.

According to their announcement, 275 Smokehouse would use the Ball building for about a year, after which the owners hoped to reopen Paradise Catfish. A change of kitchen operator also calls for coordination over equipment, deliveries and cold storage before a different menu begins service.

The owners described the restaurant as an important part of their family and community history. Their January account presented the arrangement as a pause, with the existing premises expected to remain in food-service use under another business.
