Basile Appears on Cleco’s Hurricane Laura Restoration List
Utility crews were working in Basile on August 29, 2020, as Cleco continued restoring service after Hurricane Laura. The company’s town-by-town update placed Basile among the communities receiving attention on the second day of its storm-restoration effort.
Across Cleco’s service territory, Laura had interrupted power to roughly 140,000 customers; by 11 a.m. that Saturday, more than 62,000 had been reconnected. Those were systemwide figures, while the Basile update confirmed crews were still working locally. For a food business waiting on electricity, a refrigerated trailer with an independent power supply could bridge a gap in its normal storage arrangements. Cleco also asked residents to give workers space, explaining that stopping crews created safety concerns and slowed the restoration effort.

Basile’s Swine Festival Returns to the Pig Barn in November
Basile’s Louisiana Swine Festival is scheduled for November 6–8, 2026, at the Pig Barn, 2000 West Stagg Avenue. The setting connects the celebration to the local hog trade that helped launch it: the Southwest Louisiana Swine Association began in 1963, organizing feeder-pig sales before the festival followed in 1966.
Food and music remain central to the weekend, giving visitors a reason to spend time in town as well as celebrate its agricultural history. For vendors preparing pork dishes over several days, refrigerated trailers could provide extra space between deliveries and cooking. The festival’s return to the Pig Barn keeps those practical food preparations close to a place that has been part of Basile’s story for decades.

Tornado Near Mamou on May 19, 2019
A May 19, 2019 entry in NOAA’s storm archive describes a tornado about 2.13 miles southeast of Mamou, in Evangeline Parish. Acadiana Renaissance Faire schedules a winter run in Evangeline Parish
The Acadiana Renaissance Faire scheduled its 2026 season for weekends from January 10 through February 8 at 629 Mount Carmel Road, using a Ville Platte postal address in Evangeline Parish. For Chataignier residents, it offered a nearby themed gathering built around Post Bonhomie, the faire’s imagined historic outpost. Food sellers at a recurring outdoor event need cold storage for ingredients between preparation and service.
A Relocated Building Gives D.I.’s a Permanent Restaurant Near Basile
D.I.’s Cajun Restaurant opened its original restaurant building outside Basile on February 7, 1986, after years of serving crawfish from a farm equipment building. Daniel Isaac and Sherry Fruge had reached the point where picnic tables in the barn could no longer accommodate returning customers.
In a later oral-history interview, Sherry recalled moving a former catfish restaurant from Mamou and spending roughly five months preparing it to meet health requirements. Moving from informal farm meals to a restaurant also brought food receiving, preparation and cold storage into a more permanent working arrangement.
The opening grew from the family’s crawfish farming, which began in the late 1970s. What started as an additional outlet for the farm’s catch became a dining destination among the rice fields and crawfish ponds near Basile.

November Tornado Damages Basile Meat Shop and Injures Three Workers
An EF1 tornado struck Basile on November 5, 2024, badly damaging Rhea’s Specialty Meat and Smokehouse near U.S. 190. Three employees were taken to the hospital. In its follow-up report, KALB said the owner expected all three to recover and that one had already been released.
The storm pushed in the front of the building and brought down walls on its right side, where the freezer remained standing amid the damage. That surviving freezer highlighted how closely a meat business’s recovery is tied to usable cold storage. The National Weather Service’s preliminary assessment put the tornado’s winds at 95 mph. Owner Jude Burton described his first concern as his employees, while the damaged building showed how suddenly an ordinary workday had changed.

School Board Approves New Equipment for Basile High’s Lunch Kitchen
Basile High School’s lunch kitchen received approval for a substantial equipment purchase at the Evangeline Parish School Board’s July 19, 2017, meeting. Members accepted low bids for a boilerless steamer, a 40-gallon gas tilt skillet, holding and transport cabinets, convection ovens, a combination oven and ten cafeteria tables.
The purchases covered several stages of meal service, from cooking to holding food and seating students. As equipment changes move through a school kitchen, access to cold storage remains part of the meal-service plan. Members present approved the purchases unanimously, selecting suppliers separately for the different pieces of equipment. The decision formed part of a period of investment at Basile High, with construction payments for school improvements also appearing on that meeting’s agenda.

Basile’s Mardi Gras Run Brings Generations Together Around Gumbo
Basile’s Courir de Mardi Gras began at sunrise on February 17, 2026, as participants set out to gather food and contributions for a community gumbo. Music accompanied the traditional appeals for ingredients, with older residents and children taking part together.
The day also included a nursing-home visit, allowing longtime participants who could no longer join the run to share in the celebration. KPLC’s coverage followed three generations of one family, including an eight-year-old learning the customs from her father and grandmother. With ingredients arriving throughout a community cooking day, cold storage belongs in the preparations alongside the pots and serving tables. The gathering gave Basile another chance to pass its Mardi Gras traditions from experienced runners to their younger neighbors.

Successive Additions Turn D.I.’s into a 275-Seat Dining and Music Venue
By 2014, D.I.’s Cajun Restaurant near Basile had grown into a 275-seat venue, with food and live music sharing the evening. Co-owner Sherry Fruge told Acadiana Profile that the building had been enlarged four times as demand carried the business beyond its original seasonal plans.
The restaurant’s own history notes that one expansion added a bandstand and dance floor. More dining space also meant a larger seafood service, where deliveries and cold storage needed to keep pace with the kitchen’s work.
Fruge was still closely involved in cooking when the 2014 profile appeared. The menu included boiled crawfish, crabs and étouffée, while the family’s musicians helped sustain the entertainment program. Those additions had made room for a business that customers wanted to visit beyond crawfish season.

Cold-Weather Plan Brings Overnight Water Interruptions to Basile
Basile residents were told to prepare for two overnight water interruptions as cold weather approached in January 2024. A January 15 announcement said Bayou Des Cannes, the town’s supplier, planned to turn water off from 9:30 p.m. until 6 a.m. that night and the next.
According to the mayor, the aim was to preserve service during daytime hours. A boil advisory would follow when pressure returned, remaining in place until further notice. For kitchens planning the next day’s service, the interruption meant checking water arrangements alongside ice supplies and cold storage. The notice gave households and businesses a defined overnight schedule, while making clear that the return of running water would still come with a precautionary advisory.

South Louisiana Processing Center Restarts Operations Near Basile
The South Louisiana ICE Processing Center returned to operation near Basile in 2019 after several years of closure. GEO Group disclosed an agreement to reactivate the existing 1,000-bed property, and a November inspection described the reopened facility’s housing, medical and food-service areas.
The kitchen served a dining hall with room for 240 people, providing three hot meals each day. Restoring that daily meal schedule brought food deliveries, preparation and cold storage back into the operation of the previously idle site.
The inspection placed the facility on 25 acres on Basile’s outskirts and described five housing units alongside a separate warehouse and maintenance building. Its reopening was an operational restart of an existing property, with the kitchen and dining hall supporting the people held at the center.
Food-Pantry Fire Tests First Baptist Church’s Community Work
An electrical fire struck the food-pantry storage building at First Baptist Church in Basile in June 2020, adding another rebuilding challenge for the congregation. The church had experienced a parsonage fire in 2018, and a tree would fall on that residence during the following August.
A Louisiana Baptist Message report in April 2022 described donations that helped cover rebuilding costs after those setbacks. It also reported that the congregation continued operating its monthly food pantry. For a pantry recovering from a storage-building fire, portable cold storage could support any perishable donations while permanent space is restored. The church’s experience connected repair work with an ongoing community responsibility: keeping its food ministry available to neighbors despite repeated damage to church property.

April 10, 2024 brought strong thunderstorm winds to Jefferson Davis Parish, with a report logged about 0.6 miles east of Elton. Professional and amateur cooks were to prepare competing dishes, with public sales beginning after judges received their samples. Cold storage for crawfish and other ingredients belongs in the preparation before teams begin building their sauces.

NOAA documented a tornado about 2.76 miles southwest of Iota on November 25, 2010, in Acadia Parish.
